The unshared electron pair of the 1-nitrogen atom in the imidazole ring participates in the cyclic conjugation, and the electron density of the nitrogen atom is reduced, making it easy for the hydrogen on this nitrogen atom to leave in the form of hydrogen ions.
Imidazole is acidic and alkaline, and can form salts with strong bases. The chemical properties of imidazole can be summarized as a combination of pyridine and pyrrole. These two structural units happen to be in enzymes. Histidine plays an important role in the catalysis of lipid hydrolysis as an acyl transfer reagent. Imidazole derivatives exist in biological organisms and are more important than imidazole itself in scientific research and industrial production, such as DNA, hemoglobin, etc.

One use of imidazole is to purify His-tagged proteins in metal chelate affinity chromatography (IMAC). The tagged protein binds to the nickel ion medium in the bead hole on the surface of the chromatography column. Excess imidazole passes through the chromatography column to elute the tagged protein coordinated with nickel to obtain a high-purity target protein.
Imidazole is an important fine chemical raw material, mainly used in the synthesis of medicines and pesticides and epoxy resin curing agent, used as a pesticide raw material, used as a synergist for boric acid preparations, and used to prepare insecticides and fungicides. Used as an epoxy resin curing agent, it can improve the mechanical properties of products such as bending, stretching, and compression, improve the electrical properties of insulation, and improve the chemical properties of chemical resistance.
