2,4-Dihydroxy-6-methylpyrimidine, also known as 6-methyluracil, can be used to synthesize the cardiovascular drug dipyridamole (2,6-bis(diethanolamine)4,8-dipiperidinyl-pyrimidine-[5,4-d]pyrimidine). Dipyridamole was previously used to treat coronary artery insufficiency, angina pectoris, and prevent myocardial infarction. Currently, it is mainly used as an antithrombotic drug in heart surgery or valve replacement to reduce the formation of thromboembolism. It can also be used to synthesize orotic acid and the pesticide sildenafil. It is an important pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediate.
