Dimethyl carbonate CAS#616-38-6
Dimethyl carbonate is quickly referred to as DMC. At room temperature, it is a colorless and obvious liquid with a pungent smell with a relative density (D204) of 1.0694, a melting factor of four °C, boiling factor of 90.3 °C, the flash factor being 21.7 °C (opening) and being 16.7 °C (closed ) and the refractive index (nd20) being 1.3687. It is flammable and non-toxic and is depressing with nearly all natural solvents in any percentage with alcohols, ketones and esters. It is barely soluble in water. It can be used as the methylating agent. Compared with different methylating reagent such as methyl iodide and dimethyl sulfate, dimethyl carbonate is much less toxic, and biodegradable.
The previous technique of making dimethyl carbonate with phosgene as raw substances is no longer regularly used. Instead, human beings now undertake the catalytic oxidative carbonylation of methanol in the presence of oxygen which is greater environmentally pleasant than the preceding method.
Dimethyl carbonate can allow to methylation of aniline, phenol and carboxylic acid. However, many response needs high-pressure. DBU can be brought in the course of reflux of DMC for catalyzing the methylation of carboxylic acid with dimethyl carbonate.

Product Usage
Dimethyl carbonate is used as a solvent in natural synthesis and viewed as a substitute for solvent like methyl ethyl ketone, tert-butyl acetate and parachlorobenzotrifluoride. It is worried as an intermediate in the training of diphenylcarbonate, which in flip is used as a key uncooked fabric for the synthesis of Bisphenol-A-polycarbonate. It is additionally used as a 'green' methylating agent concerned in the methylation of aniline, phenols and carboxylic acids. It can be used as a gasoline additive due to its excessive oxygen content. It also finds purposes associated to supercapacitors and lithium batteries.
Environmentally benign alternative for dimethyl sulfate, q.v., and methyl halides in methylation reactions and for phosgene, q.v., in methylcarbonylation reactions.
