Products Description of Pyrophosphoric acid CAS#2466-09-3
Pyrophosphoric acid is a colorless needle-shaped crystal or a colorless viscous liquid. It forms crystals after long-term storage and is colorless glassy. Pyrophosphate has strong coordination properties. Excess P2O74- can dissolve insoluble pyrophosphates (Cu2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sn2+, etc.) to form complex ions, such as [Cu(P2O7)2]6-, [Sn(P2O7)2]6-, etc. It is often used as a catalyst in industry to prepare organic phosphates, etc. Pyrophosphate meets silver salt to obtain white silver pyrophosphate precipitate. The rate at which P2O74- is converted to PO43- in the solution is very slow. This reaction can be used to distinguish P2O74- and PO43- (Ag3PO4 is a yellow precipitate).
Pyrophosphoric acid is formed by heating orthophosphoric acid to 210°C and losing water. It is soluble in ethanol and ether. It is corrosive and can cause burns. Solid crystalline pyrophosphoric acid is highly hygroscopic and soluble in water, ethanol, and ether.
When heated above the melting point, it decomposes into liquid acids containing orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, trimetaphosphoric acid, polymetaphosphoric acid, etc. Crystalline pyrophosphoric acid does not decompose much in ice water, but decomposes at high temperatures, and the amount of orthophosphoric acid increases. The general solid crystal is type I pyrophosphoric acid (melting point 54.3°C). Type I crystals are heated at about 50°C in a closed tube for several hours, and then become type II pyrophosphoric acid (melting point 71.5°C). This product is stable at room temperature.
