Products Description of Iodomethane CAS#74-88-4
Methyl iodide is a halogenated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula CH3I, MeI. It is a monoiodine substitute of methane. The boiling point is 42.4℃, the relative density is 2.279 (20/4℃), it is a volatile liquid with high density at room temperature, the dipole moment is 1.59D, and the refractive index is 1.5304 (20°C, D), 1.5293 (21°C, D). Methyl iodide is miscible with common organic solvents, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether.
The pure product is colorless and has a special odor. When exposed to sunlight, it will decompose I2 and become purple, which can be removed by adding metallic copper. Methyl iodide exists in small amounts in rice fields. Methyl iodide is a commonly used methylating agent in organic synthesis. Methyl iodide is an ideal substrate for SN2 substitution reactions. On the one hand, it is easy for nucleophilic reagents to attack because of its small steric effect; on the other hand, the iodide ion is a good leaving group. Therefore, methyl iodide can be used to methylate phenols and carboxylic acids. The base (K2CO3 or Li2CO3) removes the acidic protons of the carboxylic acid or phenol to form carboxylate ions and phenolate ions, which then act as nucleophiles to undergo SN2 reactions.
