Products Description of Furfural CAS#98-01-1

Furfural is a colorless, transparent, oily liquid produced by hydrolysis and dehydration of pentosan in plant fiber raw materials. It is also called furan formaldehyde. It has a special aroma. Under light, heat, air oxidation and the action of inorganic acids, the color quickly changes to yellow-brown, and finally to dark brown. It is also easy to polymerize and become resinous. It should be stored away from light, deoxygenated and sealed. Furfural is partially miscible with water, and is also soluble in solvents such as alcohol, ether, and acetic acid. It has a large ability to dissolve aromatic hydrocarbons, olefins, polar substances and certain high molecular weight compounds, but a small ability to dissolve saturated substances such as aliphatic hydrocarbons and higher fatty acids. Various derivatives can be generated through oxidation, hydrogenation, nitration, oxidation, decarbonylation, condensation and other reactions. It is very similar to the properties of benzaldehyde, and can undergo benzoin reaction, Purkin reaction and Cannizzaro reaction. Furfural reacts with aniline glacial acetic acid solution to produce bright red, and the latter is often used as a qualitative reactant for furfural. Quantitative analysis is based on the properties of the aldehyde group and the furan ring. In addition to chromatography, there are also volumetric methods (hydroxylamine hydrochloride method, tetrabromide method, etc.) and weight methods (phloroglucinol method, barbituric acid method, etc.) for finished product analysis. The hydroxylamine hydrochloride method is used in China for finished product analysis.

Product Application of Furfural CAS#98-01-1

Furfural is the raw material for the preparation of many drugs and industrial products. Furan can also be made into succinaldehyde by electrolytic reduction, which is the raw material for the production of the drug atropine. Some derivatives of furfural have strong bactericidal ability and a wide antibacterial spectrum. For example, furfural is condensed with hydrochloric acid semicarbazide via 5-nitrofurfural to obtain furazolidin, which is a disinfectant and preservative. Furfural is the raw material for intermediates such as furan acrylic acid, furfurylamine fumaric acid, adipic acid, furfuryl alcohol, etc., and is widely used in the synthesis of fine chemicals such as medicine, pesticides, veterinary drugs, dyes, fragrances, rubber additives, preservatives, etc. The most consumed area of furfural is as a raw material for solvents and synthetic resins. In terms of synthetic resins, furan resins, furfural resins and furfuryl ketone resins can be produced. Furan resin is also called furfuryl alcohol resin. Furfural is hydrogenated under high pressure to produce furfuryl alcohol, and furfuryl alcohol is polymerized to obtain furfuryl alcohol resin. This resin has strong alkali resistance, high heat resistance and water resistance, and can be used as caulking resin cement, anticorrosive lining, and adhesive. Furfural, as a solvent, can selectively extract unsaturated components from petroleum and vegetable oils. Furfural is used to extract aromatic components from lubricating oil and diesel. Improve the quality of these products. In the production of synthetic rubber, furfural is used to extract and purify butadiene and isoprene. Furfural can irritate the skin and mucous membranes, and the maximum allowable concentration in the air is 5ppm. The oral LD50 of rats is 127mg/kg.
