Spermine is a kind of polyamine, a polyamine substance containing two amino groups and two imino groups. It is a low molecular weight aliphatic nitrogenous base with biological activity produced in the process of biological metabolism. Spermine is not high in the body, but it is a regulatory substance necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in microorganisms, animals and humans.

Most of the biological functions of spermine are based on electrostatic reactions with DNA, RNA, proteins and charged membrane components. It is a colorless, transparent or light white liquid. It is produced in the body by putrescine (diaminobutane) and S-adenosylmethionine catalyzed by multiple enzymes.

It is mainly used to produce pesticide intermediates such as methyl parathion and acephate. It and spermidine are both present in bacteria and most animal cells and are important substances that promote cell proliferation.

Under acidic conditions, it exhibits the characteristics of polycationic polyamines and can bind to DNA in viruses and bacteria. It makes DNA molecules more stable and flexible, and is also one of the necessary components in cell culture fluid.
