Products Description of Crystal Violet CAS#548-62-9

Gentian violet, also known as crystal violet and basic violet 3, is a commonly used artificial basic dye along with methyl green, neutral red, methylene blue, safranin, hematoxylin, malachite green, methyl violet and basic fuchsin. The dye index number is CIBasicViolet3(42555). It belongs to the triaminotriphenylmethane compound. It has the appearance of dark green powder or flaky crystals with bronze luster. The commercial product is a mixture of tetra-, penta- and hexamethyl basic fuchsin hydrochloride, in which the content of hexamethyl derivative is not less than 96%. Gentian violet is a mixed basic dye, mainly a mixture of crystal violet and methyl violet. When necessary, gentian violet can be used interchangeably with crystal violet. The main component of gentian violet used in medicine is methyl violet, which can replace gentian violet and crystal violet when needed. Gentian violet and acetic acid magenta are used for the color development reaction of cell chromosomes. They are often used to color chromatin or chromosomes when observing plant cell mitosis. The dilute solution of gentian violet is commonly known as gentian violet. Although the solution is slightly acidic when used for dyeing, it is an alkaline cationic dye because it has basic groups.

Soluble in water, ethanol and chloroform, insoluble in ether. Aqueous and ethanol solutions are dark purple, and turn orange in concentrated sulfuric acid. Dark green glittering powder or particles. Soluble in cold and hot water, purple, very soluble in ethanol. Reddish yellow in concentrated sulfuric acid, dark green yellow after dilution, and then turns blue and purple. The light fastness of dyeing cotton fiber is 1-2, and the light fastness of dyeing acrylic fiber is 2-3.

Product Application of Crystal Violet CAS#548-62-9

Used as an acid-base indicator, the pH color change range is 0.1 (green) to 2.0 (blue). In analytical chemistry, it is used as a non-aqueous solution titration indicator, a biological stain, a colorimetric assay developer, and is also used to test ions such as thallium, zinc, antimony, titanium, cadmium, tungsten, gold, and mercury. Crystal violet is also an important dye in bacterial Gram staining. It can be used as a dye for silk, paper, acrylic fiber, etc. The solubility of its chloride in water is 1.68%, and the solubility in 95% ethanol is 13.87%; the solubility of its iodide in the two solvents is 0.035% and 1.78%, respectively. The mixed reagent of crystal violet chloride and iodide is called gentian violet. Commonly used dyes for bacterial staining specimens include alkaline fuchsin, crystal violet, methylene blue, etc.
