Ammonium thiosulfate, chemical formula (NH4)2S2O3. Molecular weight 148.20. Colorless monoclinic crystals. Melting point 150℃ (decomposition), relative density 1.679. Easily soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in acetone. Its aqueous solution will precipitate sulfur when left for a long time. Above 50℃, its concentrated aqueous solution gradually decomposes into sulfur and sulfate. In the presence of ammonia and hydrocyanic acid, ammonium thiocyanate and ammonium sulfite are formed. The aqueous solution can dissolve silver halide. Its solubility for silver chloride and silver bromide is greater than that of sodium thiosulfate, so it is also used for fast fixing. But it has a dissolving effect on the metallic silver that constitutes the image. Preparation method: It can be prepared by adding excess ammonium carbonate to an aqueous solution of calcium thiosulfate, or by mixing ammonium bisulfide and ammonium bisulfite aqueous solution in an accurate molar ratio of 1:2 and reacting to obtain it; it can also be prepared by removing sulfur by double decomposition reaction of ammonium sulfite and ammonium polysulfide and then freezing and crystallizing it.

Ammonium thiocyanate, also known as ammonium thiocyanate, is commonly used as a photographic fixer, metal cleaning agent, electroplating solution and reducing agent. In agriculture, it is used to synthesize the intermediate tert-butyl isothiocyanate of the insecticide buprofezin, as well as the intermediate thiosemicarbazide of the insecticide pyraclostrobin, the fungicide chlorfenapyr, and the herbicide flufenacet. In addition, it is also used as an auxiliary raw material and dye for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide, a polymerization catalyst for organic synthesis, etc. In the photosensitive industry, it is used as a photographic fixer, which is easier to dissolve silver halide emulsions than sodium salts, and has the advantages of short washing time and easy silver recovery. It is also used as the main component of the silver plating bath, and as a complexing agent in cyanide-free electroplating, thiosulfate combines with silver ions to form thiosulfate silver complex ions. It improves the cathode polarization effect, making the silver plating layer crystallized and fine, and has good covering ability. The general dosage is 200-250g/L.
