Products Description of 2'-Fucosyllactose CAS#41263-94-9
BASF’s Newtrition® brand for human nutrition launched 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL), the largest human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) product, to the infant nutrition market in early 2019. HMOs are a unique class of carbohydrates that occur naturally in breast milk and are the second most abundant nutrient in breast milk after fat and lactose.
2’-fucosyllactose is produced by microbial fermentation of genetically modified Escherichia coli strains. It can be used in infant formulas for stage 1 (0-1 year), stage 2 (6 months-1 year), infant formula for special dietary purposes, and ingredients in toddler formula supplements.
Studies have shown that 2’-fucosyllactose supports a healthy gut microbiome and immune system development, can prevent allergic diseases, and plays an important role in normal brain function and cognitive development in humans. 2’-FL is also a promising ingredient in digestive health due to its ability to address mucosal inflammation.

Product Application of 2'-Fucosyllactose CAS#41263-94-9
Breastfeeding is the preferred method of infant nutrition. Most women's naturally produced breast milk contains 2'-fucosyllactose (abbreviated as 2'-FL) and is not yet capable of producing fucosylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs).
2'-FL is a major component of breast milk, but is not found in bovine milk, and there are no commercially available 2'-FL products.
2'-FL is a prebiotic for commensal intestinal bacteria, which metabolize it into short-chain fatty acids, which are then used as an energy source for colon cells and stimulate sodium and water absorption. Therefore, commercial formula milks that are used as breast milk substitutes do not provide this component, which is the most abundant in breast milk.
Most infants have a history of exposure to naturally occurring 2'-FL (through breast milk) but not to 2'-FL produced by other routes. Jennewein 2'-FL is a commercially produced product that is essentially chemically equivalent to 2'-FL naturally present in breast milk.
